Coffee Culture In The Dominican Republic

This month we are launching our Origin of the Month. We offer 12+ single origin options and are dedicating each month to highlight our farmers around the world. In July, enjoy a Dominican Republic pour over for only $3.

What is coffee like in the Dominican Republic?

The Dominican Republic is a gorgeous Caribbean country steeped in coffee culture. From a farming perspective, the Dominican Republic offers a diverse variety of land. The tropical country ranges from high mountainous altitudes to low shorelines. The coffee grown in the region is just as unique and diverse.

Like most Caribbean and South American countries, coffee is central to the social scene. Families and friends gather around a warm pot of coffee. Culturally, Dominicans love their coffee extra sweet. It is common to find a bowl of sugar beside the stovetop coffee brewer. It is also common to enjoy coffee alongside chocolate, or to melt the chocolate in the black coffee for added sweetness and flavor.

Ramirez Estate

At Baba Java Coffee, we source our Dominican Republic coffee from the Ramirez Estate. This family-owned estate is extremely intentional with their technique, and uses their coffee farm to positively impact their community. A Red Honey process is used by steeping and fermenting the coffee cherry flesh for 24 hours. This process releases natural gases that are used to partially power the estate. The beans then sit on elevated beds for 15 days before they are ready to be bagged and shipped to their final destination. Once Baba Java Coffee receives the bags of green coffee, we roast them as a medium roast.

The Ramirez Estate is creating positive change in their community. Coffee production has given them the financial freedom to impact those around them by donating books and computers to local schools, assisted in funding construction on a new school building, and assist Haitians who are seeking employment and legal residence in the DR.
