How To: Make Coffee in a Pour Over

We recently created a tutorial in our How-To series that teaches you how to brew coffee with the Hario V60.

The Hario V60 is a fantastic brewing device that offers ceramic, metal, and plastic brewers. One of the most popular options is the plastic Hario V60 because of its heat retention, durability, and affordability.

STEP ONE

Take your filter, fold it at the seam, and place it in the brewer. Next, take water and rinse out the filter so that the filter’s taste doesn’t get into the coffee. This also seals the filter to the V60 and preheats the brewer and mug. After rinsing, dump the water out.

STEP TWO

Add about 20g of coffee to the V60. Make sure it is spread out nice and evenly. Zero out your scale, and take your water that’s just off the boil. Start a timer as soon as you begin pouring. After pouring, pick up the brewer and swirl it so that all the coffee gets wet.

STEP THREE

Pour the rest of the water. Make sure you make nice, even revolutions when doing so. As your pour, try to avoid moving your water kettle up and down. As much as possible, you will want to keep the brewer full so that the temperature remains consistent. Between 1:30 and 1:45, during the drawdown, you will see a lot of coffee forming or sticking to the sides of the filter. Knock that off so that all the coffee can be centered at the bottom, and the water can extract as much of the flavor as possible.

STEP FOUR

While you are waiting, you can preheat your mug with hot water, similar to heating the brewer. At the 3-minute mark, remove and discard the filter. Pour the coffee straight into your mug of choice!
